Economic Advantages Of Red Phosphorus Flame Retardants

My country is a major global holder of phosphorus resources, boasting abundant reserves. Red phosphorus is an inorganic substance that offers a significant cost advantage.

Due to its high flame-retardant efficiency, low cost, and halogen-free nature, it has seen increasing application in the domestic market in recent years. It is widely used as a flame retardant in products such as various resins, unsaturated resins, hot-melt adhesives, rubber, and coatings. Surface treatment via microencapsulation technology effectively addresses issues such as moisture absorption, poor resin compatibility, susceptibility to oxidation, and the potential release of toxic gases.

Microencapsulated red phosphorus flame retardants are environmentally friendly, characterized by low decomposition emissions and minimal release of phosphine gas.

Among phosphorus-based flame retardants, red phosphorus is prized for its high theoretical phosphorus content-which can reach 100%-resulting in excellent flame-retardant performance and efficiency. In practical applications, surface-treated (e.g., microencapsulated) red phosphorus is typically used to overcome its inherent drawbacks. Microencapsulation allows the material to retain high phosphorus content and flame-retardant efficiency while requiring lower dosage levels. It offers good compatibility with polymer materials, minimal impact on the physical properties of the finished product, and significantly improved thermal stability and moisture resistance, facilitating easier processing and storage. Although the phosphorus content decreases slightly after encapsulation, it remains far higher than that of other phosphorus compounds. Combined with improved moisture resistance, thermal processing stability, and greater convenience in storage and transport, red phosphorus has become one of the most widely used phosphorus-based flame retardants for thermoplastic materials.
