Researchers in the field have consistently focused on developing novel water treatment chemicals that combine two or all three of the following properties: corrosion inhibition, scale inhibition, and bactericidal action. Some have gone a step further by integrating the structures of these two types of compounds into a polymeric quaternary ammonium salt; this results in a macromolecule that incorporates both the polyphosphonate structure (derived from organic phosphonates) and the quaternary ammonium structure, thereby offering combined corrosion inhibition, scale inhibition, and the ability to inhibit or kill certain bacteria.
