Why does hydrogen-containing silicone oil absorb moisture and release water?

The phenomenon of moisture absorption and water separation in hydrogen-containing silicone oil occurs because the Si-H bonds in its molecular structure undergo hydrolysis with water molecules, producing silanol and hydrogen gas, while hydrophilic groups simultaneously adsorb moisture from the environment.

Chemical Hydrolysis Mechanism
The backbone of hydrogen-containing silicone oil contains reactive Si-H bonds (silicon-hydrogen bonds), which are extremely sensitive to moisture. Upon exposure to humid air, a hydrolysis reaction takes place: ≡Si-H + H₂O → ≡Si-OH + H₂↑. The resulting silanol (≡Si-OH) is hydrophilic and further adsorbs additional environmental water molecules via hydrogen bonding; this leads to "water separation" on the silicone oil surface, accompanied by the release of hydrogen gas.

Influence of Material Properties
The extent of moisture absorption in hydrogen-containing silicone oil is directly influenced by its hydrogen content (active hydrogen content). Oils with high hydrogen content (e.g., active hydrogen >1.5%) possess a high density of Si-H bonds and more hydrolysis sites, resulting in a more vigorous moisture-absorption reaction. Additionally, low-molecular-weight hydrogen-containing silicone oils typically exhibit faster moisture absorption rates due to their larger specific surface area.

Environmental Factors
Ambient temperature and humidity are critical external factors. The hydrolysis reaction accelerates significantly when relative humidity exceeds 60%; elevated temperatures also increase water molecule mobility, intensifying moisture absorption. Inadequate sealing during storage-leading to continuous contact with humid air-can result in condensation or even phase separation.

Application Considerations
Moisture absorption in hydrogen-containing silicone oil can lead to cross-linking failure (e.g., during silicone rubber vulcanization), catalyst poisoning (platinum catalysts are easily deactivated by water), and the appearance of white haze or bubbles on the product surface. Industrial practices require strict sealing during storage (recommended humidity <30%) and nitrogen blanketing after opening; furthermore, prioritizing grades with higher molecular weights and moderate hydrogen content helps reduce sensitivity to moisture absorption.
